In 1985 childcare centers, preschools and kindergartens wanted to provide the best education and care for young children, but there was no national system to measure the quality of early childhood programs. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) changed all that.
For more than 20 years, NAEYC has helped families choose quality childcare programs where their children will be safe, healthy, and learning every day by establishing a voluntary national, accreditation system for centers that outlined stringent criteria and gave childcare programs tools to build and maintain high quality early care and education.
Accreditation for In-Home childcare by the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) and accreditation for Before-and-After-School-Care Programs by the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) naturally followed.
The nurturing and educational experiences children get in their early years build a foundation for success -- in school and beyond. Parents, teachers, business leaders, and policymakers alike can help promote excellence in early childhood education.
